Can I be held legally accountable for illegal activities perpetrated by my tenant from my townhouse - eg prostituting, selling drugs etc The Body Corp lawyers have threatened to take me to court and sue the pants off me as the owner of the property. They say the tenant has contravened Body Corp Rules. The tenant has since been evicted. V

I think owners can be held accountible. Even heard that the Asset Forfeiture Unit can be called in too. But I guess that would happen if owner does nothing to stop the problem.

You certainly will have accountability. Naturally, whatever liability you have and damages you suffer as a consequence thereof can be actioned against the tenants.

Also remember, that when a Body Corporate want to give fines or take action on such allegations, they must be able to back their claims with proof. If they can not give any proof and you can not find any proof, you may be held accounatable for invasion of privacy by the tenant. Very difficult subject to handle.

to be on the safe side .. file a complaint to the police for nuisance from the tenant and give a simple letter to tenant to quit
