I have a landlord whose levies are going up more than 50% and there is a special levy for 6 months in the development and both total nearly R700 per month. The Landlord is insisting I increase the rent by that amount. I feel this is unreasonable on a property that is rented for approx R4000 per month. Can anybody advise?

I'm assuming that the current tenant would not want to renew at R4700. I would advise him on the current rental value for his property and provide him with comparisons. If there is too large a gap between the market value and the proposed R4700, I would counsel him on the potential financial loss he will incur if he ends up with a void period.

Does your lease allow fro increases midterm? If not owner has to wait for its expiry or give notice. Levies are normally owners responsibility and rent should be market related. The two have little to do with each other in my view. Nobody but the marked makes the prioes.
